Some people are concerned that anal sex might stretch out or damage their anus. Feel comfort that millions of people have anal sex without this problem. Women’s Health Magazine asked New York City sex therapist Ian Kerner, Ph.D., author of She Comes First, to weigh in. In his conclusion, Kerner states, If you’re a fan of butt play, you don’t have to give it up for fear of damaging that vital muscle, says Kerner. As it turns out, Kegels, the exercise made famous for strengthening your pelvic floor and possibly boosting your orgasm, can also tone up your sphincter. Kerner points out that he hasn’t heard complaints about it from any of his clients who engage in anal sex.
The site WellandGood.com covered the topic and provided similar advice, the rectum is the last part of your large intestine, which leads to the anus, says Evan Goldstein MD, CEO and founder of Bespoke Surgical, a sexual-wellness company specializing in anal-related health. “There are actually three sets of muscles that comprise the anal sphincter, which is the last part of your anus.” Two of these muscles are voluntarily controlled (relaxed and contracted), while the third operates involuntarily. For pleasurable and successful anal, all three of these need to be relaxed. How? Foreplay. The article continues to say, just as you can overstretch your hamstring in yoga, you can also overstretch your sphincter during anal if you push the boundaries of their anal elasticity. Your body will usually alert you via pain that what you’re doing isn’t A-okay.
Dr. Goldstein and Alicia Sinclair, certified sex educator, also feature in the article; both experts say the fear of damage shouldn’t stop you from exploring butt play and pleasure with a partner you trust.
To tame your worries, practice preventative measures, like Kegels and pelvic-floor strengthening moves. Sinclair says yup, those famous do-anywhere vaginal-strengtheners also lend themselves to your anal sphincter. You might try strengthening them Hilaria Baldwin-style.
